Rieslingfreak No. 9 | Sekt 'Reverence Riesling' | Clare Valley | 2016
The man behind this wine is John Hughes who is just slightly obsessed with Riesling. He has won multiple awards for his expressions of Riesling and his label has gained somewhat of a cult-like status.
Sekt is German for sparkling wine often made using the tank method and No.9 is a sparkling Riesling, which is pretty rare in Australia. Rieslingfreak No.9 is made from the family vineyards, but with the fruit selected from the coolest site that experience slow ripening, with high natural acidity.
The wine is made using the Traditional Method, which is the same as that used in Champagne. Post second fermentation it spends nearly three years on lees allowing for some added complexity. This is the equivalent of an Extra Brut in style, so super dry and super fresh.A dry style of sparkling with the complexity of the yeast autolysis, yet still the fresh citrus you would expect from a good Riesling.
100% Riesling | Clare Valley fruit from 2016 harvest | Made using Traditional Method | Aged for 30-36 months on lees | 2.5 g/L dosage | 11.5% abv | 750 ml
Awards & Reviews
"Kerosene, toast, apricot and ginger notes mark the beginning of maturity in this crunchy and dry Riesling of classic Clare Valley lime and granny smith apple fruit. Hints of tropical fruits and mixed spice make for a complex style with a dry and firm finish," James Halliday.
